Presentation Reaction: Wired and Wireless Telegraph

Image
During the presentations, I learned a lot. One of the things that stood out to and interested me was the history and impact of the wired and wireless telegraph.  The wired telegraph was created by Samuel Morse in the 1830s. He was also the one who developed "Morse Code" in collaboration with Alfred Vail. Morse code was a new code that assigned dots and dashes to each letter of the alphabet. This code was transferred over the telegraph to send messages to people far away. The first message sent over the wired telegraph was sent on May 24, 1844, saying  "What hath God wrought" . Messages like this were initially written on paper and then had to be translated and then had to be sent to whomever by hand. This was known as the Last Mile Problem.  The wireless telegraph was created by Guglielmo Marconi , an Italian inventor. The wireless telegraph allowed communication without wires, using the electromagnetic spectrum. Marconi created a telegraph company in Britain call

History of Paper

Image
Paper is an essential part of technology that has aided in the development of humans as a species. Paper is a thin material usually produced from natural fibers such as wood pulp and is used for writing, drawing, or printing.  It has a history of more than 2,000 years and has been used worldwide. The first appearance of something paper-like was in Egypt in 2000 B.C. They produced an inferior version of paper known as papyrus. The superior and more reliable paper-making method was recorded in China around 105 C.E. Its invention is credited to Cai/Tsai Lun , an Eastern Han Dynasty court official.  Cai Lun devised a method using natural fibers like wooden pulp, hemp, or old cotton rags. A thin layer of fiber was created by heating these fibers and submerging them in warm water, which was then flattened out and left to dry. This method was cheap and very easy to produce compared to using bamboo, wood, or silk. The initial use of paper wasn't writing, though; the paper produced throu

Privacy

Privacy is something that is valued by every individual. It is important to keep your personal information safe and protected, especially in a world where everything you do is monitored. Though the technology itself is very useful, it is a double-edged sword since it also allows for an excessive amount of surveillance. Digital privacy should be one of everyone's top priorities.  Privacy, especially digital privacy is important to normal people just like you and me. Most may think invasions of privacy mostly happen to people of power since their information is "more valuable". But to the companies and the government, information is information. Social media like Facebook , Instagram , and X are big ways to how information can be gathered from you. In this video, Juan Enriquez compares people interacting with social media, that being liking, posting, or commenting to a tattoo. He states that tattoos are something visible and permanent that can say a lot about your charac

The Eight Values of Free Expression

Image
The First Amendment is part of the U.S. Constitution that was created on September 17th, 1787. It protects U.S. citizen's freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. In class, we discussed Eight Speech Theories that describe the importance of free speech and expression. There are so many different ways the First Amendment can interpreted; it's essential to consider the many different theories by various people in order to better understand our Constitution and our right to free speech.  - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -      The seventh value resonates with me the most. The theory is that freedom of speech promotes innovation and creativity and allows society to express itself in any way possible. In  Jack Balkin's  book  Living Originalism , he states that free speech itself promotes a "democratic culture." Demo

The Supreme Court

Image
By definition, The Supreme Court is "the highest tribunal in the Nation for all cases and controversies arising under the Constitution or the laws of the United States."  Previously, I didn't know much about the Supreme Court since I never really went out of my way to learn it once it was taught in my classes. By reading the overview of the Supreme Court by the History Channel, I've learned a lot more about this part of our government.  Something I didn't know but learned about the Supreme Court through this article is that the chief justice presides over impeachment trials against the President in the Senate. I already knew that the chief justice is the head of the Supreme Court, but it was interesting to learn that they are involved in impeachment cases when the president is the one that confirms or denies their position in the court.  The most important takeaway point about the Supreme Court is that even though the court's justices may interpret the Const

My Top 5 News Sources

Image
Where you get your news really matters, especially in a world like today. So many things are constantly happening in and out of the United States. It's essential to keep up to date with the latest news so you can live your life well-informed about policies and politics. There are so many sources to choose from, some reliable and some not. It's also essential to gather information from new sources that are both right and left-leaning as well as more in-between to get a better understanding of the issue and not be blinded by an excessively biased source. Here, I've created a list of my top new sources to gather reliable information.  CNN is a popular source in general. It covers both national and international news. I like CNN due to its popularity and widespread reach. I also like how the website has so many different news sections. It covers things like politics and contains articles about health or the stock markets. Most of their news articles are quick and to the
